do you want to learn english?
well, there is more than a handful of people in the DR who would answer YES to that question.
the english classes here started last week and, thus far, everything is going great.
there is one class in chichigua, which has actually become a literacy class. since chichigua is currently only haitian, there are few people who speak spanish, and they certainly aren't fluent. there are also very few of them, even those who go or have gone to school, who can read and write. so, instead of starting with english, we're starting with basic literacy skills. i had forgotten how long it takes to learn the alphabet! but besides their seeming inability to come to class on time (which is actually improving), they are great students and are learning quickly.
there are 4 classes in pancho mateo, all of which are very different in personality. the biggest class is a group of appx. 15 of the donas (the married women) - a bit intimidating, but at least they're having fun! this class is at the same time as one of camille's classes in PM, so we meet outside of dona mercedes' house - they don't seem to mind the extra noise and enjoy the breeze, and i'm always assured my afternoon cafecito from the dona. since we meet outside, there are also always a few random kids (and even some random moto drivers) who stop by to pick up a few words. i have been trying to get a picture of this group for you to see, but they always refuse, with the excuse that their hair isn't fixed! oh well, maybe some day.
i also have the pleasure of having miguel (jennie's fiance) and his three sisters in one of my classes. it's great to have students that i get to see much more of outside of class.
as i was leaving chichigua today, my students began thanking me in english. i pass this gratitude on to you, for your support that allows me to be here to hear their spoken words of thanks.
